The town of Đakovo has spread on 173 square kilometers,
and its 30.000 inhabitants devotedly care for the
tradition and the historical sights. The name akovo
was mentioned for the first time in 1239, which proves
its long-lasting history. Thanks to the fact that
it became an episcopate center, akovo got significant
characteristics as a religious and cultural centre
in this part of Croatia. The economical power of
the diocese was, through centuries, seen in the construction
of churches and convents, but it culminated during
the time of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer when the
magnificant Cathedral and the bishop's palace were
built.
The story of the Cathedral, which was built from 1866 to 1882, was greatly described by the words of Pope John Paul II.who, during his visit of akovo in 2003., repeated the words of his predecessor Pope John XXIII., who said that this is the most beautiful cathedral between Venice and Constantinopole.

Đakovo is also well-known for its breeding of
thoroughbred horses. The studfarm was founded
a long time ago in 1506., and for the last 200
years exclusive Lippizaner horses are being bred.
Many statemen and women visited the studfarm,
including Queen Elizabeth.
There are many other stories about the town:
the preserved walls in Gothic style from the 14.
century, which surrounded the medevial Đakovo, the
old town's nucleus, the theological faculty, Strossmayer's
park, museums, the folklore event called Đakovački
vezovi (Đakovo Embroideries), the vineyards of Đakovo,
the numerous tennis courts and other sports facilities,
but all these stories can't nearly be told as well
as they can be seen!
